ITINERARY BY DAY

Ho Chi Minh City Full Day Tour (L)

At 8:00 am, start your Ho Chi Minh city tour full day to visit two iconic architectural landmarks the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office built between 1877 and 1883 by renowned designer Gustav Eiffel. The cathedral still remains an active church with services each day and is favoured backdrop for Vietnamese wedding photographs.

From the Saigon cathedral, take a short stroll along Dong Khoi Street to the Saigon Opera House. From a bomb shelter to housing the parliamentary Lower House, the Opera House has had an interesting history. Restored in 1995 the Opera House has returned to its roots and is once again a theatre.

Next, visit the Reunification Palace, once a symbol of the South Vietnamese Government. It was here on 30 April 1975, that the war ended when a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its gates. See the war room, the banquet hall and the presidential office with the unusual gifts which have been received. Continue on to the War Remnants Museum, your guide will tell the story of the city’s darkest and most tragic hours during the Vietnam War. The museum contains displays of military aircraft, weaponry and many photographs – some that are quite graphic in nature.

After lunch at a hidden Vietnamese restaurant, step off the tourist trail for next stop on this Saigon full day city tour. Visit a Secret Weapons Hiding Place Museum (Bảo tàng Hầm bí mật chứa vũ khí) – this place itself is a historical venue, where the army of North Vietnam hid their weapons right inside the heart of Saigon. A visit is well worth if you are interested in history of Vietnam war.

Head to Cho Lon – the city’s Chinatown and Thien Hau Pagoda which is dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea. With intricate friezes, carved tableaus and impressive incense coils make for some great photos. Then observe street life with a cyclo ride through the narrow streets to Binh Tay market that sells everything from hats to dried squid!

TOUR NOTES

Note: Binh Tay market, an 88 year old structure is going under a comprehensive 365-day-restoration project starting from Nov 2016. During this renovation time, the visit will be arranged at temporary market, located on Thap Muoi Street, just opposite the existing market, with space for up to 1,077 stalls.

Excellent alternative Saigon tour from cruise ship!

I highly recommend using them if you are looking for a shore excursion from Phu My to Ho Chi Minh and don’t want to use the one from your cruise ship then this private company is an excellent choice. If you know what you want to do in Saigon then they will take you there. If you don’t know what to do or what to see, no worries, they will plan the whole day for you.

They will pick you up with a guide and driver outside the gate but again no worries as it’s a very short walk. The whole day will be spent with an excellent guide. They will have you back to the ship in plenty of time. Also you will have great food as they will take you to the best places to sample the yummy food of Saigon. Good coffee too. I highly recommend using them.

We did on our December cruise and Joseph picked us up at the gate in Phu My and we had the whole day in Saigon. It was a very enjoyable day with him. He is a great ambassador for his country and he tries to make sure his client’s day is exceptional. Two thumbs up for this private tour company! You can also use them if you are not on a cruise. If you are in Saigon and need a guide then this is the company to use… they are the BEST!

Saigon also known as Ho Chi Minh City

A most amazing day! Our guide couldn’t be faulted. He was so attentive and conscientious and we are most grateful. We also had a 45 minute rickshaw ride through the markets. The car and driver were also excellent, air conditioned and iced water to keep us hydrated.

At our request our guide took us to a local restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious and traditional soup with rice noodles and beef. We then went on to what is the best known coffee shop to sample their coffees before ending our tour at the war museum. We were passengers on the the Silver Shadow Cruise Ship and will certainly recommend Detoured Asia to any friend coming to Vietnam.
